Evening Adhkar | Authentic Evening Remembrance & Duas

Evening adhkar (Adhkar al-Masaa) are daily supplications taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to be recited at the close of the day. They serve as a spiritual fortress, protecting a Muslim through the night, wiping away sins, and granting peace of mind.

أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، رَبِّ أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا فِي هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَخَيْرَ مَا بَعْدَهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِي هَذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ وَشَرِّ مَا بَعْدَهَا، رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَسُوءِ الْكِبَرِ، رَبِّ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابٍ فِي النَّارِ وَعَذَابٍ فِي الْقَبْرِ

Transliteration

Amsayna wa amsal-mulku lillah, wal-hamdu lillah, la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. Rabbi as'aluka khayra ma fi hadhihil-laylati wa khayra ma ba'daha, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma fi hadhihil-laylati wa sharri ma ba'daha. Rabbi a'udhu bika minal-kasali wa su'il-kibar, Rabbi a'udhu bika min 'adhabin fin-nari wa 'adhabin fil-qabr.

Translation

We have reached the evening and at this time the entire kingdom belongs to Allah, and all praise is due to Allah. There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs sovereignty and praise, and He is over all things competent. My Lord, I ask You for the good of this night and the good of what follows it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this night and the evil of what follows it. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from laziness and helpless old age. My Lord, I seek refuge in You from punishment in the Fire and punishment in the grave.

Meaning and Explanation

This supplication affirms Allah's absolute sovereignty over the creation at nightfall, seeking His blessing for the night and protection from physical and spiritual harm.

When to Recite

Between Asr and Maghrib prayer, or after Maghrib prayer until nightfall.

Recite attentively and with reflection on Allah's dominance over time and creation.

Important Notes

Evening adhkar consist of various supplications including Ayat al-Kursi, the 3 Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas), Sayyid al-Istighfar, and evening-specific protection formulas.

Protects against evil throughout the night, shields from punishment in the grave and Hellfire, cures spiritual laziness, and brings tranquility before sleep.

Additional Duas

A'udhu bikalimatil-lahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

Allahumma bika amsayna, wa bika asbahna, wa bika nahya, wa bika namutu, wa ilaykal-masir.

O Allah, by You we enter the evening and by You we enter the morning, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the final return.
