Dua When It Rains | Authentic Rain Dua & Meaning

Rain is one of the greatest signs of Allah's mercy (rahmah) and divine power. It revives dead land, provides life-giving water for humans and animals, and sustains agriculture. In Islam, moments of rainfall are special times when prayers are answered (mustajab). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught believers to welcome rainfall with gratitude and to ask Allah that the rain be beneficial and free from harm.

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Transliteration

Allāhumma ṣayyiban nāfi'ā.

Translation

O Allah, make it a beneficial rainfall.

Meaning and Explanation

The word 'sayyib' refers to heavy, pouring rain. By adding the description 'nafi'an' (beneficial), the supplication asks Allah that the rain brings life, growth, and prosperity rather than destruction, flooding, or punishment. It acknowledges that water is a blessing only when Allah decrees it to bring benefit.

When to Recite

Recite this dua as soon as you see rain starting to fall or hear the raindrops.

How to Recite

Recite the supplication out loud or silently with a heart full of hope and gratitude as the rain begins.

Important Notes

It is also Sunnah to expose a portion of your body (such as your hands or arms) to the rain briefly, as the Prophet ﷺ did, saying: 'It has just come from its Lord.' If rain becomes overly heavy and threatens harm, switch to the dua for heavy rain/thunderstorm.

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Muṭirnā bi-faḍlillāhi wa raḥmatih.

We have been given rain by the grace and mercy of Allah.

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ

Subḥānal-ladhī yusabbiḥur-ra'du bi-ḥamdihi wal-malā'ikatu min khīfatih.

Glory be to Him Whom the thunder praises with His praise, and the angels out of fear of Him.

اللَّهُمَّ حَوَالَيْنَا وَلاَ عَلَيْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ عَلَى الآكَامِ وَالظِّرَابِ، وَبُطُونِ الأَوْدِيَةِ، وَمَنَابِتِ الشَّجَرِ

Allāhumma ḥawālaynā wa lā 'alaynā, Allāhumma 'alal-ākāmi waẓ-ẓirābi, wa buṭūnil-awdiyati, wa manābitish-shajar.

O Allah, send it around us and not upon us. O Allah, send it upon the plateaus, the hills, the valleys, and the places where trees grow.
