Dua for Evening | Authentic Evening Adhkar & Protection Supplications

As daytime draws to a close and night falls, a Muslim turns to Allah in gratitude and seeking protection. The evening remembrance (Adhkar al-Masa') serves as a spiritual fortress, safeguarding the believer from night-time harms, evil eye, anxiety, and the whispers of Shaytan. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established specific supplications for dusk, entrusting the night to Allah's divine care.

اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا، وَبِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا، وَبِكَ نَحْيَا، وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ، وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ

Transliteration

Allāhumma bika amsaynā, wa bika aṣbaḥnā, wa bika naḥyā, wa bika namūtu, wa ilaykal-maṣīr.

Translation

O Allah, by You we enter the evening and by You we enter the morning; by You we live and by You we die, and unto You is the final return.

Meaning and Explanation

This foundational evening supplication acknowledges that the transition from day to night occurs solely by Allah's divine will. It reinforces total submission to the Almighty, reminding the believer that our temporary worldly life will culminate in returning to Allah ('ilaykal-masir').

When to Recite

The optimal time for evening adhkar begins after Asr prayer until Maghrib or early night, though it can still be recited later in the evening if missed.

How to Recite

Recite attentively and calmly, reflecting upon the meanings of each word, preferably while sitting in a state of wudu after Asr or Maghrib.

Important Notes

The evening adhkar consist of several authentic supplications, including Ayat al-Kursi, Sayyid al-Istighfar, 'A'udhu bi-kalimatillahi at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq', and the last three Surahs of the Qur'an.

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

A'ūdhu bi-kalimātillāhit-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq.

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ

Amsaynā wa amsal-mulku lillāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh, lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahū lā sharīka lah.

We have entered the evening and the kingdom belongs to Allah, and all praise is for Allah. There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner.
