Dua for Good Neighbors and Peaceful Neighborhood

An authentic Prophetic supplication seeking refuge in Allah from bad neighbors in one's permanent residence while asking for peaceful, righteous community life.

In Islam, rights of neighbors (Huquq al-Jar) are given immense emphasis. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that Angel Jibril kept advising him concerning the neighbor until he thought Jibril would make the neighbor an heir (Sahih al-Bukhari). Having a good, peaceful neighbor is counted among the greatest worldly blessings, while a bad neighbor causes constant distress. Turning to Allah in prayer helps secure peaceful surroundings and protects the home from harm.

Meaning and Explanation

In this authentic Prophetic supplication from Sunan an-Nasa'i and Sahih Ibn Hibban, the Prophet ﷺ specifically sought protection from an evil neighbor in a permanent dwelling. A bad permanent neighbor causes long-term grief and disturbance, whereas a temporary neighbor eventually leaves.

When to Recite

Recite when moving to a new home, buying or renting property, during morning and evening Adhkar, or when experiencing neighborhood friction.

How to Recite

Recite with conviction, and actively fulfill the Islamic rights of your neighbors by offering food, greeting them warmly, refraining from causing noise or nuisance, and helping them when in need.

Important Notes

Reported in Sunan an-Nasa'i and Al-Adab al-Mufrad. Islamic rights apply to all neighbors up to forty houses away, regardless of their faith.

Benefits

Protects the home and family from malicious neighbors, fosters peace and safety in the neighborhood, brings barakah to the home, and attracts pious community members.
