Duas for Character and Morals

Dua for Overcoming Pride and Arrogance

A Quranic supplication asking Allah to guard the heart against spiritual deviation, vanity, and pride while bestowing mercy and humility.

Pride and arrogance (Kibr) are severe spiritual diseases in Islam. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ defined pride as 'rejecting the truth and looking down upon people' and warned that no one with even an atom's weight of pride in their heart will enter Paradise (Sahih Muslim). Overcoming pride requires constant self-reflection, recognizing that all gifts belong solely to Allah, and seeking divine guidance for a humble heart.

Meaning and Explanation

This Quranic verse from Surah Ali 'Imran is a supplication for spiritual protection. Pride causes the heart to deviate from guidance toward self-righteousness. Asking Allah for mercy keeps the heart humble, grounded, and aware of its total dependence on Him.

When to Recite

Recite during daily prayers (in Sujud or Tashahhud), after achieving personal success, during morning and evening Adhkar, or whenever feeling impulses of pride.

How to Recite

Recite with deep reflection on Allah's greatness, acknowledge your shortcomings, practice active gratitude, and serve others with kindness and humility.

Important Notes

This supplication is from Quran 3:8. Overcoming pride requires combining prayer with practical humility: accepting truth from anyone, serving others, and avoiding boastful talk.

Benefits

Protects the heart from vanity and self-admiration ('Ujb), fosters genuine humility (Tawadu'), maintains spiritual guidance, and nurtures respect and empathy toward others.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي لِأَحْسَنِ الْأَخْلَاقِ لَا يَهْدِي لِأَحْسَنِهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allahumma-hdini li-ahsani-l-akhlaqi la yahdi li-ahsaniha illa ant.

O Allah, guide me to the best of character; none can guide to the best of character except You.
