Dua for Overcoming Greed and Cultivating Contentment

A Prophetic supplication asking Allah for sufficiency, piety, chastity, and a contented heart that is free from excessive worldly desire.

Greed (Thama' or Shuhh) and excessive attachment to material wealth erode inner peace and spiritual well-being. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that if a human being were given a valley of gold, they would desire a second one. Islam teaches that true wealth is not the abundance of material possessions, but the richness of the soul (Qana'ah). Turning to Allah in prayer purifies the heart from greed and instills deep contentment with His decree.

Meaning and Explanation

This comprehensive authentic supplication from Sahih Muslim asks Allah for four essential spiritual pillars. 'Al-Ghina' in this context means spiritual contentment—being completely satisfied with what Allah has provided, thereby freeing the heart from greed, covetousness, and worldly obsession.

When to Recite

Recite regularly during daily prayers (in Sujud or before Salam), during morning and evening Adhkar, or whenever feeling discontented with material circumstances.

How to Recite

Recite with a sincere heart, reflect on the temporality of worldly life, practice giving in charity (Sadaqah), and focus on spiritual growth.

Important Notes

Reported in Sahih Muslim. Overcoming greed requires combining prayer with practical habits: giving regularly in charity and avoiding envy toward those with greater wealth.

Benefits

Purifies the heart from greed and avarice, instills deep contentment (Qana'ah) with halal provisions, frees the mind from worldly anxiety, and earns Allah's pleasure.
