Dua for a Sign from Allah

Islamic guidance on Istikhara and seeking Allah's guidance without superstition.

When uncertain about a decision, Islam provides the prayer of Istikhara and sincere supplication rather than requiring believers to search for supernatural signs. A 'sign' in Islam is often the ease or difficulty Allah places in the path after one seeks His counsel.

Meaning and Explanation

This is a key part of the Istikhara prayer. It asks Allah to facilitate what is genuinely good and to turn away what is harmful, trusting His infinite knowledge over our limited perception.

When to Recite

Read it when you are faced with a choice between two lawful matters and need guidance on which path to take.

How to Recite

Perform two rak'ats of non-obligatory prayer, then recite the full Istikhara dua. Mention your specific matter when you reach the words 'hadhal-amra' (this matter).

Important Notes

There is no authentic dua that forces a supernatural sign. Istikhara is not about waiting for a dream, a specific color, or a magic number; it is about Allah making the right choice easy for you to pursue.

Benefits

It removes anxiety and teaches trust in Allah's wisdom. It protects the believer from falling into 'Tiyarah' (superstition or seeking omens).

Additional Duas

اللهم إن كان هذا الأمر شرا فاصرفه عني واصرفني عنه

Allahumma in kana hadhal-amra sharran fasrifhu 'anni wasrifni 'anhu

O Allah, if this matter is evil for me, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it.
