Duas for the Deceased

Dua for Mercy on the Dead

A Quranic supplication asking Allah for mercy and forgiveness for deceased believers.

The mercy (Rahmah) of Allah is the only thing that can protect a soul in the afterlife. Muslims are encouraged to pray for deceased believers, asking Allah to widen their graves, light their path, and grant them His ultimate mercy.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua asks Allah for forgiveness and mercy for ourselves and for all those who lived and died with faith before us, recognizing the bond of the Ummah.

When to Recite

Read it during personal supplications, after Salah, or when visiting the graveyard.

How to Recite

Recite it with a heart full of compassion, sincerely wishing for the deceased to be spared from any hardship in the Barzakh.

Important Notes

This is Quran 59:10. While there isn't one 'exclusive' mercy dua, the word 'warhamhu' (and have mercy on him) is central to many Prophetic supplications for the dead.

Benefits

It is a comprehensive prayer that encompasses all deceased Muslims. Seeking mercy for others is a way to have mercy shown to oneself by the angels.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ

Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him.
