Duas for Forgiveness

Dua for Forgiveness of the Dead

A collection of Quranic and Prophetic supplications asking Allah to forgive believers who have passed away.

Praying for the deceased is one of the greatest gifts a living person can offer those who have passed. The Quran teaches us to ask for forgiveness for those who preceded us in faith.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua asks Allah to forgive current believers and those who died before them, while also asking for a heart free of malice toward other Muslims.

When to Recite

After the death of a Muslim, when visiting graves, or during personal prayers.

How to Recite

Recite sincerely with the intention of benefitting the souls of the departed.

Important Notes

Islam permits asking for forgiveness for deceased Muslims. However, seeking forgiveness for those who died in a state of polytheism (shirk) is not permitted.

Benefits

It provides spiritual benefit to the deceased, increases the reward of the supplicant, and fosters a sense of brotherhood across generations.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ

Allahummagh-fir lahu warhamhu wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him safety and pardon him.
