Dua for Gratitude | Authentic Islamic Shukr Dua

Gratitude (Shukr) is a cornerstone of faith in Islam. Allah promises in the Qur'an that if we are grateful, He will grant us even more. The Prophet ﷺ taught us specific, beautiful supplications to continuously express gratitude and ask Allah for the strength to remain thankful in both good and challenging times.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

Transliteration

Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibadatik.

Translation

O Allah, help me to remember You, to give thanks to You, and to worship You in the best manner.

Meaning and Explanation

This supplication recognizes that true gratitude and worship are gifts from Allah Himself, so we ask for His Divine assistance to stay grateful and perform acts of worship with excellence (Ihsan).

When to Recite

Recommended after every obligatory prayer (Salah), as advised by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to Mu'adh ibn Jabal (RA), as well as in the morning and evening adhkar.

How to Recite

Recite with a humble heart, recognizing your complete dependence on Allah's grace and reflecting upon His immense favors.

Important Notes

Showing Shukr is done not only with the tongue through Dua, but also with the heart (acknowledging the source of blessings) and through limbs (using blessings in ways that please Allah).

Benefits

Protects against ingratitude (Kufr al-ni'mah), increases blessings (Barakah) in life, draws the servant closer to Allah, and brings peace and contentment to the heart.

Additional Duas

Rabbi awzi'ni an ashkura ni'matakal-lati an'amta 'alayya wa 'ala walidayya wa an a'mala salihan tardahu wa adkhilni birahmatika fi 'ibadikas-salihin.

My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteousness of which You approve, and admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants.

Allahumma ma asbaha bi min ni'matin aw bi-ahadin min khalqika faminka wahdaka la sharika lak, falakal-hamdu wa lakash-shukr.

O Allah, whatever blessing has received me or any of Your creation this morning is from You alone, without partner. To You belongs all praise and to You belongs all thanks.
