Dua for a Good Night | Authentic Bedtime Dua for Peaceful Sleep

Sleep in Islam is considered a minor form of death, making bedtime remembrance essential. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught beautiful supplications before sleeping that renew one's faith, seek forgiveness for the day's sins, and place the believer under Allah's complete protection throughout the night.

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Transliteration

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.

Translation

In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua acknowledges that sleep is a form of minor death and waking is a form of resurrection. The believer entrusts their soul to Allah at night, recognizing that only by His will do we wake again.

When to Recite

Every night before sleeping, ideally after performing Wudu, dusting the bed, and lying on the right side.

How to Recite

Lie on your right side facing the Qiblah, place your right hand under your cheek, and recite this dua along with other established bedtime adhkar.

Important Notes

The Prophet ﷺ would combine this dua with other bedtime supplications including Ayat al-Kursi, the 3 Quls (wiping them over the body), and the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah.

Places the sleeper under Allah's protection, renews Tawhid before sleep, grants peace of mind, and protects from nightmares and harm during the night.

Additional Duas

Allahumma aslamtu nafsi ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhi ilayk, wa fawwadtu amri ilayk, wa alja'tu zahri ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk, la malja'a wa la manja minka illa ilayk. Amantu bikitabikal-ladhi anzalta wa binabiyyikal-ladhi arsalta.

O Allah, I submit myself to You, and I turn my face to You, and I entrust my affairs to You, and I completely rely on You, in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.

La ilaha illallahul-Wahidul-Qahhar, Rabbus-samawati wal-ardi wa ma baynahumal-'Azizul-Ghaffar.

There is no deity except Allah, the One, the Prevailing, Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Mighty, the Perpetual Forgiver.
