Duas for the Deceased

Dua for a Deceased Friend

A Quranic supplication asking Allah to forgive believers who passed away before us.

True friendship in Islam is built for the sake of Allah. The bond of brotherhood and sisterhood does not end at death. The best way to honor a deceased friend is by remembering them in your prayers, asking Allah to forgive their shortcomings and grant them peace in the grave.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua from Surah Al-Hashr asks Allah to grant forgiveness (Maghfirah) to the living and to those fellow believers who have already passed away, maintaining the spiritual connection of the Ummah.

When to Recite

Read it upon hearing of their death, while visiting their grave, or during your private supplications.

How to Recite

Recite it sincerely with the intention of gifting the reward of the prayer to your friend. You may add specific personal requests for them in your own language.

Important Notes

This is Quran 59:10. While 'brothers' is mentioned, in Arabic it encompasses both male and female believers in general context. For a female friend, you can specifically use the word 'laha' (for her) in additional Sunnah prayers.

Benefits

It is an act of loyalty that can help ease the friend's journey in the afterlife. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that praying for a deceased Muslim is a right they have over us.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ

Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him.
