Dua Before Fajr (Suhoor & Tahajjud Time)

Authentic supplications and Istighfar to recite before the Fajr prayer during the blessed last third of the night.

The period before Fajr—known as the pre-dawn hours (Sahar) or the last third of the night—is one of the most spiritually blessed times for making dua. Allah descends to the lowest heaven during this time, asking: 'Who is calling upon Me so that I may answer him? Who is asking Me so that I may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him?'

Meaning and Explanation

This comprehensive Quranic dua asks Allah for every form of goodness in worldly life (health, Halal sustenance, peace) and the Hereafter (Paradise, mercy) while seeking protection from Hellfire.

When to Recite

During the pre-dawn hours before the Fajr Adhan, while performing Tahajjud, eating Suhoor, or waiting for Fajr prayer.

How to Recite

Recite in solitude with humility, raising your hands in supplication and seeking sincere forgiveness (Istighfar).

Important Notes

While there is no single mandatory dua restricted to this time, abundant Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) before Fajr is explicitly praised in the Qur'an (Surah Adh-Dhariyat 51:18).

Additional Duas

Rabbana innana amanna faghfir lana dhunubana wa qina 'adhaban-nar.

Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

Allahumma Rabba Jibra'ila wa Israfila wa Mika'ila wa Muhammadin-nabiyyi, a'udhu bika minan-nar.

O Allah, Lord of Jibreel, Israfil, Mika'il, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, I seek refuge in You from the Fire.
