Dua After Maghrib | Authentic Post-Prayer & Evening Adhkar

After completing the Maghrib prayer, Muslims are encouraged to recite the established adhkar taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after every obligatory prayer. Because Maghrib marks the beginning of the night, this is also an ideal time to continue with the evening adhkar and seek Allah's protection for the night ahead.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلَامُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلَامُ، تَبَارَكْتَ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

Transliteration

Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah, Astaghfirullah. Allahumma antas-Salamu wa minkas-salam, tabarakta ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram.

Translation

I seek forgiveness from Allah. I seek forgiveness from Allah. I seek forgiveness from Allah. O Allah, You are As-Salam (the Source of Peace), and from You comes peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.

Meaning and Explanation

Seeking forgiveness immediately after prayer acknowledges that our worship is never perfect. It is followed by praising Allah as the source of all peace and security.

When to Recite

Immediately after the Tasleem of the obligatory Maghrib prayer.

How to Recite

Say Astaghfirullah three times, then 'Allahumma antas-Salam...', followed by the other post-salah adhkar such as Tasbih, Ayat al-Kursi, and the evening adhkar.

Important Notes

These opening adhkar are established after every obligatory prayer, not only Maghrib. The tahlil recited ten times (listed below) is narrated specifically for after Maghrib and Fajr; at-Tirmidhi graded its chain hasan gharib.

Makes up for shortcomings in the prayer, draws the worshipper closer to Allah, and begins the night with remembrance and peace of heart.

Additional Duas

La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.
