Duas for the Deceased

Dua for Janazah Prayer

An authentic funeral prayer supplication asking Allah to forgive and have mercy upon the deceased.

Salat al-Janazah (Funeral Prayer) is a communal obligation (Fard Kifayah) in Islam. The essence of this prayer is to intercede for the deceased. The most critical part occurs after the third Takbir, where the congregation recites specific supplications for the soul of the departed.

Meaning and Explanation

This supplication asks Allah for four things: Maghfirah (forgiveness of sins), Rahmah (enveloping them in mercy), 'Afiyah (well-being/safety from the trials of the grave), and 'Afw (complete pardoning/erasing of faults).

When to Recite

During the Salat al-Janazah, specifically after the third Takbir and before the fourth.

How to Recite

Recite it with a sincere heart. If the deceased is female, change the ending to 'laha' (e.g., warham-ha). If it is a group, use 'lahum'.

Important Notes

This specific wording is from Sahih Muslim. While this is a short version, there are longer, comprehensive narrations that include praying for the living and the dead together.

Benefits

Reciting these words during the Janazah prayer acts as a powerful intercession. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that when a group of Muslims prays for a deceased person, their intercession is often accepted.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا

Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina wa shahidina wa gha'ibina

O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent.
