Duas for the Hereafter

Dua for the Grave

Authentic supplications asking Allah for forgiveness, mercy and protection related to the grave.

The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to pray for our deceased brothers and sisters, asking Allah to widen their graves, fill them with light, and protect them from the trials and punishment of the Barzakh.

Meaning and Explanation

This comprehensive supplication asks Allah to forgive the sins of the deceased, envelop them in His mercy, grant them safety from the trials of the grave, and completely erase their faults.

When to Recite

During the Janazah prayer, while visiting the graveyard, or at any time when remembering the deceased in personal supplications.

How to Recite

Recite it with sincerity. Use 'lahu' for a male, 'laha' for a female, and 'lahum' for a group. Direct your heart toward Allah's infinite mercy.

Important Notes

This wording is from Sahih Muslim. It is also recommended to seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave for oneself during daily prayers.

Benefits

It is an act of Sunnah that directly benefits the deceased. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that the prayer of a Muslim for their brother in their absence is accepted.
