Duas for the Deceased

Dua for Deceased Parents

A Quranic supplication asking Allah to forgive and have mercy upon our parents.

Islam encourages believers to pray for their parents. After a parent passes away, children can continue making sincere dua for their forgiveness and mercy. This is one of the ways to continue showing goodness (Birr) to them after their death.

Meaning and Explanation

The dua asks Allah to treat one's parents with the utmost mercy, just as they showed love, care, and mercy to their child during their vulnerable years of infancy and childhood.

When to Recite

Read it regularly—after daily prayers, during moments of solitude, or whenever you remember your parents.

How to Recite

Recite it with a heart full of gratitude and love, asking Allah to grant them a high place in Jannah (Paradise).

Important Notes

This is Quran 17:24. While this verse applies to living parents, it is also highly recommended to recite it for those who have passed away. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that a child's prayer for their parents is one of the few things that benefits a person after death.

Benefits

Reciting this dua is an act of obedience to Allah's command in the Quran. It is a way for a child's prayers to potentially elevate the status of their parents in the Hereafter.

Additional Duas

رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسَابُ

Rabbanaghfir li wa liwalidayya wa lil-mu'minina yawma yaqumul-hisab

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day the account is established.
