Duas for the Deceased

Dua When Visiting Graves

A Prophetic supplication greeting the deceased and asking Allah for well-being.

Visiting graves is a Sunnah that serves as a powerful reminder of our mortality and the life to come. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to greet the inhabitants of the graves and pray for their well-being as well as our own.

Meaning and Explanation

This greeting acknowledges the deceased as part of the believing community, expresses certainty in the reality of death, and asks Allah for 'Afiyah' (protection from harm and affliction) for both the living and the dead.

When to Recite

Read it as you approach the graves or enter the cemetery grounds.

How to Recite

Recite it with presence of mind, facing the graves, but direct your actual prayers and requests to Allah alone.

Important Notes

Reported in Sahih Muslim. It is forbidden to pray to the deceased or ask them for help; the dua is for them, addressed to Allah.

Benefits

It helps soften the heart, reduces attachment to worldly life, and fulfills a religious duty toward deceased Muslims by offering them a greeting of peace.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

Allahummaghfir lahum warhamhum

O Allah, forgive them and have mercy on them.
