Dua When Seeing the New Moon - Crescent Moon Dua

The new moon marks the beginning of a lunar month. A supplication has been reported from the Prophet ﷺ asking Allah to make the new moon appear with blessing, faith and safety.

اللَّهُمَّ أَهِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا بِالْيُمْنِ وَالْإِيمَانِ، وَالسَّلَامَةِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ، رَبِّي وَرَبُّكَ اللَّهُ

Transliteration

Allahumma ahillahu alayna bil-yumni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam, Rabbi wa Rabbuk Allah.

Translation

O Allah, bring it over us with blessing, faith, safety and Islam. My Lord and your Lord is Allah.

Meaning and Explanation

The dua asks Allah to make the new lunar month a time of blessing, faith, safety and submission to Him. It also addresses the moon, acknowledging that both the human and the celestial body are creations of Allah.

When to Recite

When seeing the new crescent at the beginning of any Hijri (lunar) month.

How to Recite

Recite the supplication while looking at the new moon with a heart full of hope for the month ahead.

Important Notes

This wording is reported in Sunan al-Tirmidhi (3451). It is a Sunnah to recite it at the start of every lunar month, including Ramadan and Shawwal.

It connects the sight of the crescent with remembrance of Allah and hope for a good month, reinforcing that all cycles of time are under His control.
