Duas for the Hereafter

Dua for Protection in the Grave

An authentic supplication asking Allah for protection from the punishment of the grave.

The punishment of the grave (Adhab al-Qabr) is a reality in Islamic belief. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized seeking refuge from it daily. This specific supplication is part of a broader prayer he taught his companions to recite in every prayer before the final salutations.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua is a direct plea for divine protection. By reciting it, the believer acknowledges their vulnerability and asks Allah to safeguard them from the squeeze, darkness, and trials that can occur in the Barzakh (the life between death and resurrection).

When to Recite

It is highly recommended to recite this during every Salah, specifically after the final Tashahhud and before the Taslim. It can also be read as a general dhikr.

How to Recite

Recite it with a heart that is conscious of the meeting with Allah, seeking His mercy and protection with complete sincerity.

Important Notes

Seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave is established in numerous authentic Hadiths. Along with this dua, reciting Surah Al-Mulk every night is also a known protection from the grave.

Benefits

It follows a consistent practice of the Prophet ﷺ, provides spiritual security, and serves as a constant reminder of the life to come, encouraging one to prepare through good deeds.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama wa min 'adhabil-qabr

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell and from the punishment of the grave.
