Dua of Gratitude After Eating

Recite this authentic supplication after finishing a meal to thank Allah for providing food and seeking His forgiveness.

Islam teaches Muslims to remember Allah when enjoying food and to praise Him after eating. The Prophet ﷺ taught several authentic words of praise. This specific dua is highly virtuous, as the Prophet ﷺ promised forgiveness of past sins for the one who recites it with sincerity.

Meaning and Explanation

The supplication recognizes that every morsel of food and every provision ultimately comes from Allah's grace, and the human has no independent power to sustain themselves.

When to Recite

Immediately after finishing a meal or a snack.

How to Recite

Say the words clearly and thoughtfully after finishing, reflecting on the blessing of having food when many others do not.

Important Notes

It is also Sunnah to lick the fingers (if eating with hands) and to praise Allah generally by saying 'Alhamdulillah'.

Benefits

According to the Hadith, whoever recites this after their meal will have their previous sins forgiven. It also cultivates humility and prevents arrogance regarding one's wealth or efforts.

Additional Duas

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

Al-ḥamdu lillāh

All praise is for Allah.
