Duas for the Deceased

Dua for the Dead

A Quranic supplication asking Allah to forgive believers who passed away before us.

Muslims are encouraged to pray for deceased believers and ask Allah to forgive them and have mercy upon them. This practice strengthens the bond of the Ummah across generations.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua from Surah Al-Hashr is a comprehensive prayer asking Allah to grant forgiveness (Maghfirah) not only to ourselves but to all those believers who lived and died before our time.

When to Recite

Read it after hearing of a death, during personal supplications, while visiting graves, or when remembering deceased loved ones.

How to Recite

Recite it sincerely with a heart full of hope in Allah's mercy. It can be recited individually or during congregational prayers.

Important Notes

This is verse 10 of Surah Al-Hashr. While this is a general Quranic prayer, there are also specific Sunnah prayers for the Janazah (funeral) prayer.

Benefits

It fosters a sense of community and reminds us of our predecessors. Reciting it is an act of Sunnah that brings rewards for both the living and the deceased.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ
