Duas for the Deceased

Dua for a Deceased Relative

A Quranic supplication asking Allah to forgive deceased believers and family members.

Maintaining the ties of kinship (Silat al-Rahim) is a fundamental duty in Islam that does not end with death. When a relative passes away, the best gift you can send them is a sincere prayer for their forgiveness, light in their grave, and high status in Paradise.

Meaning and Explanation

This dua from Surah Al-Hashr asks Allah to grant forgiveness to the living and to those fellow believers—including our relatives—who have already passed away.

When to Recite

Read it whenever remembering a deceased relative, after daily prayers, or when visiting the cemetery.

How to Recite

Recite it sincerely with the intention of seeking mercy for your specific relative. You may follow it with personal prayers in any language.

Important Notes

This is Quran 59:10. While the Arabic uses 'brothers,' it is inclusive of all male and female relatives and believers. For a specific female relative, you can use 'laha' (for her) in Sunnah prayers.

Benefits

It fulfills the right of a deceased relative upon the living and serves as a means of continuous charity (Sadaqah) for their soul.

Additional Duas

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ

Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu

O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him.
