بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ طسم ۝ ١

Ta. Sin. Mim.

تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ ۝ ٢

These are verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.

لَعَلَّكَ بَاخِعٌ نَفْسَكَ أَلَّا يَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ ۝ ٣

It may be thou frettest thy soul with grief, that they do not become Believers.

إِنْ نَشَأْ نُنَزِّلْ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ آيَةً فَظَلَّتْ أَعْنَاقُهُمْ لَهَا خَاضِعِينَ ۝ ٤

If (such) were Our Will, We could send down to them from the sky a Sign, to which they would bend their necks in humility.

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ ذِكْرٍ مِنَ الرَّحْمَٰنِ مُحْدَثٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا عَنْهُ مُعْرِضِينَ ۝ ٥

But there comes not to them a newly-revealed Message from (Allah) Most Gracious, but they turn away therefrom.

فَقَدْ كَذَّبُوا فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ أَنْبَاءُ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ ۝ ٦

They have indeed rejected (the Message): so they will know soon (enough) the truth of what they mocked at!

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا إِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَمْ أَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْجٍ كَرِيمٍ ۝ ٧

Do they not look at the earth,- how many noble things of all kinds We have produced therein?

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ ۝ ٨

Verily, in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe.

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ ۝ ٩

And verily, thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful.

وَإِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبُّكَ مُوسَىٰ أَنِ ائْتِ الْقَوْمَ الظَّالِمِينَ ۝ ١٠

Behold, thy Lord called Moses: "Go to the people of iniquity,-

قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ أَلَا يَتَّقُونَ ۝ ١١

"The people of the Pharaoh: will they not fear Allah?"

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي أَخَافُ أَنْ يُكَذِّبُونِ ۝ ١٢

He said: "O my Lord! I do fear that they will charge me with falsehood:

وَيَضِيقُ صَدْرِي وَلَا يَنْطَلِقُ لِسَانِي فَأَرْسِلْ إِلَىٰ هَارُونَ ۝ ١٣

"My breast will be straitened. And my speech may not go (smoothly): so send unto Aaron.

وَلَهُمْ عَلَيَّ ذَنْبٌ فَأَخَافُ أَنْ يَقْتُلُونِ ۝ ١٤

"And (further), they have a charge of crime against me; and I fear they may slay me."

قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ فَاذْهَبَا بِآيَاتِنَا ۖ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ مُسْتَمِعُونَ ۝ ١٥

Allah said: "By no means! proceed then, both of you, with Our Signs; We are with you, and will listen (to your call).

فَأْتِيَا فِرْعَوْنَ فَقُولَا إِنَّا رَسُولُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝ ١٦

"So go forth, both of you, to Pharaoh, and say: 'We have been sent by the Lord and Cherisher of the worlds;

أَنْ أَرْسِلْ مَعَنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ ۝ ١٧

"'Send thou with us the Children of Israel.'"

قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ ۝ ١٨

(Pharaoh) said: "Did we not cherish thee as a child among us, and didst thou not stay in our midst many years of thy life?

وَفَعَلْتَ فَعْلَتَكَ الَّتِي فَعَلْتَ وَأَنْتَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ ۝ ١٩

"And thou didst a deed of thine which (thou knowest) thou didst, and thou art an ungrateful (wretch)!"

قَالَ فَعَلْتُهَا إِذًا وَأَنَا مِنَ الضَّالِّينَ ۝ ٢٠

Moses said: "I did it then, when I was in error.

فَفَرَرْتُ مِنْكُمْ لَمَّا خِفْتُكُمْ فَوَهَبَ لِي رَبِّي حُكْمًا وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ ۝ ٢١

"So I fled from you (all) when I feared you; but my Lord has (since) invested me with judgment (and wisdom) and appointed me as one of the messengers.

وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَيَّ أَنْ عَبَّدْتَ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ ۝ ٢٢

"And this is the favour with which thou dost reproach me,- that thou hast enslaved the Children of Israel!"

قَالَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَا رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝ ٢٣

Pharaoh said: "And what is the 'Lord and Cherisher of the worlds'?"

قَالَ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُوقِنِينَ ۝ ٢٤

(Moses) said: "The Lord and Cherisher of the heavens and the earth, and all between,- if ye want to be quite sure."

قَالَ لِمَنْ حَوْلَهُ أَلَا تَسْتَمِعُونَ ۝ ٢٥

(Pharaoh) said to those around: "Did ye not listen (to what he says)?"

قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ۝ ٢٦

(Moses) said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers from the beginning!"

قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَكُمُ الَّذِي أُرْسِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ لَمَجْنُونٌ ۝ ٢٧

(Pharaoh) said: "Truly your messenger who has been sent to you is a veritable madman!"

قَالَ رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ ۝ ٢٨

(Moses) said: "Lord of the East and the West, and all between! if ye only had sense!"

قَالَ لَئِنِ اتَّخَذْتَ إِلَٰهًا غَيْرِي لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ مِنَ الْمَسْجُونِينَ ۝ ٢٩

(Pharaoh) said: "If thou dost put forward any god other than me, I will certainly put thee in prison!"

قَالَ أَوَلَوْ جِئْتُكَ بِشَيْءٍ مُبِينٍ ۝ ٣٠

(Moses) said: "Even if I showed you something clear (and) convincing?"

The translation of the Qurʻan into modern languages has always been a difficult issue in Islamic theology. Because Muslims revere the Qurʻan as miraculous and inimitable (iʻjaz al-Qurʻan), they argue that the Qurʻanic text should not be isolated from its true form to another language or written form, at least not without keeping the Arabic text with it. Furthermore, an Arabic word, like a Hebrew or Aramaic word, may have a range of meanings depending on the context – a feature present in all Semitic languages, when compared to English, Latin, and Romance languages – making an accurate translation even more difficult

According to Islamic theology, the Qurʻan is a revelation very specifically in Arabic, and so it should only be recited in Quranic Arabic. Translations into other languages are necessarily the work of humans and so, according to Muslims, no longer possess the uniquely sacred character of the Arabic original. .

The task of translation of the Qurʻan is not an easy one; some native Arab speakers will confirm that some Qurʻanic passages are difficult to understand even in the original Arabic script. A part of this is the innate difficulty of any translation; in Arabic, as in other languages, a single word can have a variety of meanings. There is always an element of human judgement involved in understanding and translating a text. This factor is made more complex by the fact that the usage of words has changed a great deal between classical and modern Arabic. As a result, even Qurʻanic verses which seem perfectly clear to native Arab speakers accustomed to modern vocabulary and usage may not represent the original meaning of the verse.

The original meaning of a Qurʻanic passage will also be dependent on the historical circumstances of the prophet Muhammad's life and early community in which it originated. Investigating that context usually requires a detailed knowledge of hadith and sirah, which are themselves vast and complex texts. This introduces an additional element of uncertainty which cannot be eliminated by any linguistic rules of translation.
