بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا ۝ ١

By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence;

وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطًا ۝ ٢

By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed);

وَالسَّابِحَاتِ سَبْحًا ۝ ٣

And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy),

فَالسَّابِقَاتِ سَبْقًا ۝ ٤

Then press forward as in a race,

فَالْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرًا ۝ ٥

Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord),

يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ ۝ ٦

One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion,

تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ ۝ ٧

Followed by oft-repeated (commotions):

قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ ۝ ٨

Hearts that Day will be in agitation;

أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ ۝ ٩

Cast down will be (their owners') eyes.

يَقُولُونَ أَإِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ ۝ ١٠

They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state?

أَإِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَخِرَةً ۝ ١١

"What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?"

قَالُوا تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ ۝ ١٢

They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!"

فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ ۝ ١٣

But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry,

فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِ ۝ ١٤

When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment).

هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰ ۝ ١٥

Has the story of Moses reached thee?

إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَبُّهُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى ۝ ١٦

Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:-

اذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَىٰ ۝ ١٧

"Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds:

فَقُلْ هَلْ لَكَ إِلَىٰ أَنْ تَزَكَّىٰ ۝ ١٨

"And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?-

وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ ۝ ١٩

"'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'"

فَأَرَاهُ الْآيَةَ الْكُبْرَىٰ ۝ ٢٠

Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign.

فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ ۝ ٢١

But (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance);

ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ ۝ ٢٢

Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah).

فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ ۝ ٢٣

Then he collected (his men) and made a proclamation,

فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَىٰ ۝ ٢٤

Saying, "I am your Lord, Most High".

فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ نَكَالَ الْآخِرَةِ وَالْأُولَىٰ ۝ ٢٥

But Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life.

إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِمَنْ يَخْشَىٰ ۝ ٢٦

Verily in this is an instructive warning for whosoever feareth (Allah).

أَأَنْتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ ۚ بَنَاهَا ۝ ٢٧

What! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it:

رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا ۝ ٢٨

On high hath He raised its canopy, and He hath given it order and perfection.

وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا ۝ ٢٩

Its night doth He endow with darkness, and its splendour doth He bring out (with light).

وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَاهَا ۝ ٣٠

And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse);

The translation of the Qurʻan into modern languages has always been a difficult issue in Islamic theology. Because Muslims revere the Qurʻan as miraculous and inimitable (iʻjaz al-Qurʻan), they argue that the Qurʻanic text should not be isolated from its true form to another language or written form, at least not without keeping the Arabic text with it. Furthermore, an Arabic word, like a Hebrew or Aramaic word, may have a range of meanings depending on the context – a feature present in all Semitic languages, when compared to English, Latin, and Romance languages – making an accurate translation even more difficult

According to Islamic theology, the Qurʻan is a revelation very specifically in Arabic, and so it should only be recited in Quranic Arabic. Translations into other languages are necessarily the work of humans and so, according to Muslims, no longer possess the uniquely sacred character of the Arabic original. .

The task of translation of the Qurʻan is not an easy one; some native Arab speakers will confirm that some Qurʻanic passages are difficult to understand even in the original Arabic script. A part of this is the innate difficulty of any translation; in Arabic, as in other languages, a single word can have a variety of meanings. There is always an element of human judgement involved in understanding and translating a text. This factor is made more complex by the fact that the usage of words has changed a great deal between classical and modern Arabic. As a result, even Qurʻanic verses which seem perfectly clear to native Arab speakers accustomed to modern vocabulary and usage may not represent the original meaning of the verse.

The original meaning of a Qurʻanic passage will also be dependent on the historical circumstances of the prophet Muhammad's life and early community in which it originated. Investigating that context usually requires a detailed knowledge of hadith and sirah, which are themselves vast and complex texts. This introduces an additional element of uncertainty which cannot be eliminated by any linguistic rules of translation.
