بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ وَالنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰ ۝ ١

By the Star when it goes down,-

مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰ ۝ ٢

Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled.

وَمَا يَنْطِقُ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ ۝ ٣

Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.

إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْيٌ يُوحَىٰ ۝ ٤

It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:

عَلَّمَهُ شَدِيدُ الْقُوَىٰ ۝ ٥

He was taught by one Mighty in Power,

ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَاسْتَوَىٰ ۝ ٦

Endued with Wisdom: for he appeared (in stately form);

وَهُوَ بِالْأُفُقِ الْأَعْلَىٰ ۝ ٧

While he was in the highest part of the horizon:

ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰ ۝ ٨

Then he approached and came closer,

فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰ ۝ ٩

And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer;

فَأَوْحَىٰ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ مَا أَوْحَىٰ ۝ ١٠

So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey.

مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰ ۝ ١١

The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw.

أَفَتُمَارُونَهُ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ ۝ ١٢

Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw?

وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰ ۝ ١٣

For indeed he saw him at a second descent,

عِنْدَ سِدْرَةِ الْمُنْتَهَىٰ ۝ ١٤

Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass:

عِنْدَهَا جَنَّةُ الْمَأْوَىٰ ۝ ١٥

Near it is the Garden of Abode.

إِذْ يَغْشَى السِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ ۝ ١٦

Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)

مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ ۝ ١٧

(His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong!

لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الْكُبْرَىٰ ۝ ١٨

For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest!

أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللَّاتَ وَالْعُزَّىٰ ۝ ١٩

Have ye seen Lat. and 'Uzza,

وَمَنَاةَ الثَّالِثَةَ الْأُخْرَىٰ ۝ ٢٠

And another, the third (goddess), Manat?

أَلَكُمُ الذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ الْأُنْثَىٰ ۝ ٢١

What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female?

تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰ ۝ ٢٢

Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!

These are nothing but names which ye have devised,- ye and your fathers,- for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!- Even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord!

أَمْ لِلْإِنْسَانِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰ ۝ ٢٤

Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after?

فَلِلَّهِ الْآخِرَةُ وَالْأُولَىٰ ۝ ٢٥

But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong.

وَكَمْ مِنْ مَلَكٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ لَا تُغْنِي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مِنْ بَعْدِ أَنْ يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَرْضَىٰ ۝ ٢٦

How many-so-ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable to Him.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْآخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ الْمَلَائِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ الْأُنْثَىٰ ۝ ٢٧

Those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names.

وَمَا لَهُمْ بِهِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ الظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِي مِنَ الْحَقِّ شَيْئًا ۝ ٢٨

But they have no knowledge therein. They follow nothing but conjecture; and conjecture avails nothing against Truth.

فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْ مَنْ تَوَلَّىٰ عَنْ ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا ۝ ٢٩

Therefore shun those who turn away from Our Message and desire nothing but the life of this world.

ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ اهْتَدَىٰ ۝ ٣٠

That is as far as knowledge will reach them. Verily thy Lord knoweth best those who stray from His Path, and He knoweth best those who receive guidance.

Surah An Najm Translation in English by Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Surah An Najm( سورة النجم ) - Translation of Quran in English by Abdullah Yusuf Ali ( Yusuf Ali)

The translation of the Qurʻan into modern languages has always been a difficult issue in Islamic theology. Because Muslims revere the Qurʻan as miraculous and inimitable (iʻjaz al-Qurʻan), they argue that the Qurʻanic text should not be isolated from its true form to another language or written form, at least not without keeping the Arabic text with it. Furthermore, an Arabic word, like a Hebrew or Aramaic word, may have a range of meanings depending on the context – a feature present in all Semitic languages, when compared to English, Latin, and Romance languages – making an accurate translation even more difficult

According to Islamic theology, the Qurʻan is a revelation very specifically in Arabic, and so it should only be recited in Quranic Arabic. Translations into other languages are necessarily the work of humans and so, according to Muslims, no longer possess the uniquely sacred character of the Arabic original. .

The task of translation of the Qurʻan is not an easy one; some native Arab speakers will confirm that some Qurʻanic passages are difficult to understand even in the original Arabic script. A part of this is the innate difficulty of any translation; in Arabic, as in other languages, a single word can have a variety of meanings. There is always an element of human judgement involved in understanding and translating a text. This factor is made more complex by the fact that the usage of words has changed a great deal between classical and modern Arabic. As a result, even Qurʻanic verses which seem perfectly clear to native Arab speakers accustomed to modern vocabulary and usage may not represent the original meaning of the verse.

The original meaning of a Qurʻanic passage will also be dependent on the historical circumstances of the prophet Muhammad's life and early community in which it originated. Investigating that context usually requires a detailed knowledge of hadith and sirah, which are themselves vast and complex texts. This introduces an additional element of uncertainty which cannot be eliminated by any linguistic rules of translation.
